BECOME A PART OF IAAL NOW!For decades, locksmiths have been called on to open, make keys for, and repair locks on automobiles and other vehicles as part of their everyday work. But with the introduction in the mid-1980s of the Vehicle Anti-Theft System (VATS) on General Motors vehicles, automotive locksmithing as a distinct specialty was born.
While the mechanics of most locking mechanisms in the automobile industry were familiar, the integration of electronics took automotive locksmithing to a completely different level — from the early VATS through today's transponders, EEPROMs and microprocessors to enhance vehicle security. General locksmiths could no longer do automotive work as a simple addition to their services. Due to the rapid growth and change in these locking systems, automotive locksmithing became a specialty requiring its own set of tools and specialized training.
The International Association of Automotive Locksmiths (IAAL) was formed to address these special needs. Using the resources of the ALOA Security Professionals Association, Inc., the IAAL offers focused training via hands-on classes at the annual ALOA Convention & Security Expo and at the IAAL Auto Lock Expo. The IAAL works closely with the manufacturers of these products to help provide factory training and get the latest updates available for its members. As technology changes, so will IAAL training.

Locksmiths who want to test their knowledge in automotive servicing can participate in the ALOA SPAI Proficiency Registration Program to attain one of the specialized automotive certifications the program offers.
To become a Certified Automotive Locksmith (CAL), the candidate needs knowledge and experience in servicing areas such as vehicle opening techniques, and key/fob duplication and origination. Candidates who pass the CAL exam qualify to sit for advanced certification.
To become a Certified Master Automotive Locksmith (CMAL) the candidate needs knowledge of and experience in more advanced automotive locksmithing techniques. CMAL is the highest-level certification among locksmiths who specialize in automotive services.
Vehicle locksmiths who perform forensic examinations of stolen vehicles or provide expert witness testimony may also want to consider obtaining one of the forensic locksmith certifications offered by the PRP. Candidates must possess either CAL or CMAL certifications to take either exam. Additional information about forensic automotive certification can be found on the ALOA SPAI Certification page.
